Technology Standards

The Walnut Creek School District Technology Standards for Teachers and Students were adopted by the Governing Board on March 18, 2002. They are based on national technology standards and customized by the District Technology Committee to meet the needs of our community of learners.

Kindergarten - First - Second Grades

Standard I - Basic Operations and Concepts

Students demonstrate a sound understanding of the nature and operation of technology systems.

K-2.1.1 Communicate about technology using developmentally appropriate and accurate terminology. Students are proficient in the use of technology:

K-2.1.2 Use input devices (e.g., mouse, keyboard, remote control) and output devices (e.g., monitor, printer) to successfully operate computer, VCRs, audiotapes, telephones and other technologies.

K-2.1.3 Use developmentally appropriate multimedia resources (e.g., interactive books, educational software and elementary multimedia encyclopedias) to support learning.

K-2.1.4 Use a variety of media and technology resources for directed and independent learning activities.

K: Listen to and interact with stories from CD-ROM discs.
1: Read stories from CD-ROM discs.

Standard II - Social, Ethical and Human Issues

Students understand the ethical, cultural, and societal issues related to technology.

K-2.2.1 Understand and adhere to District policies for computer use.

K-2.2.2 Demonstrate positive social and ethical behaviors when using technology.

Students practice responsible use of technology systems, information and software.

K-2.2.3 Practice responsible use of technology systems and software.

Students develop positive attitudes toward technology used that support lifelong learning, collaboration, personal pursuits and productivity.

K-2.2.4 Work cooperatively and collaboratively with peers, family members and others when using technology in the classroom.

Standard III - Technology Productivity Tools

Students use technology tools to enhance learning, increase productivity and promote creativity:

K-2.3.1 Use a variety of media and technology resources for directed and independent learning activities.

K: Create an illustration using a paint program and write a sentence describing the picture.
1: Create an illustration using a paint program and write two or three sentences describing the picture.
2: Compose a story or a poem using a word processing program and create an illustration.

Students use productivity tools to collaborate in constructing technology-enhanced models, preparing publications and producing other creative works.

K-2.3.3 Create developmentally appropriate multimedia products with support from teachers, family members or student partners.

K-2.3.4 Use technology resources (e.g., puzzles, logical thinking programs, writing tools, digital cameras, drawing tools) for problem solving, communication and illustration of thoughts, ideas and stories.

2: Compose a story or a poem using a word processing program and illustrate.
2: Create a class book relating to a content area.

Standard IV - Technology Communications Tools

Students use telecommunications to collaborate, publish and interact with peers, experts and other audiences:

K-2.4.1 Use technology resources (e.g., puzzles, logical thinking programs, writing tools, digital cameras, drawing tools) for problem solving, communication and illustration of thoughts, ideas and stories.

2: Telecommunicate as a class via e-mail to Key Pals or Book Buddies.

Students use a variety of media and formats to communicate information and ideas effectively to multiple audiences:

K-2.4.2 Use technology resources (e.g., puzzles, logical thinking programs, writing tools, digital cameras, drawing tools) for problem solving, communication and illustration of thoughts, ideas and stories.

K-2.4.3 Create developmentally appropriate multimedia products with support from teachers, family members or student partners.

Standard V - Technology Research Tools

Students use technology to locate, evaluate and collect information from a variety of sources:

K-2.5.1 Use technology resources to research a topic.

2: Access the Internet under adult supervision to extend learning.

Students use technology tools to process data and report results:

K-2.5.2 Use technology resources (e.g., puzzles, logical thinking programs, writing tools, digital cameras, drawing tools) for problem solving, communication and illustration of thoughts, ideas and stories.

Students evaluate and select new information resources and technological innovations based on the appropriateness to specific tasks.

Standard VI - Technology Problem-Solving and Decision-Making Tools

Students use technology resources for solving problems and making informed decisions:

K-2.6.1 Use technology resources (e.g., puzzles, logical thinking programs, writing tools, digital cameras, drawing tools) for problem solving, communication and illustration of thoughts, ideas and stories.

Students employ technology in the development of strategies for solving problems in the real world.

Third - Fourth - Fifth Grades

Standard I - Basic Operations and Concepts

Students demonstrate a sound understanding of the nature and operation of technology systems:

3-5.1.1 Discuss common uses of technology in daily life and the advantages and disadvantages those uses provide.

Students are proficient in the use of technology:

3-5.1.2 Use keyboards and other common input and output devices (including adaptive devices when necessary) efficiently, effectively and safely (with attention to ergonomics and physical surroundings.)

3: Begin to learn correct keyboarding skills.
4: Continue to develop keyboarding skills.
5: Continue to develop proficient keyboarding skills.

Standard II - Social, Ethical and Human Issues

Students understand the ethical, cultural and societal issues related to technology.

3-5.2.1 Understand and adhere to District policies for computer use.
3-5.2.2 Discuss common uses of technology in daily life and the advantages and disadvantages those uses provide.

Students practice responsible use of technology systems, information and software.

3-5.2.3 Discuss basic issues related to responsible use of technology and information and describe personal consequences of inappropriate use.

Students develop positive attitudes toward technology use that support lifelong learning, collaboration, personal pursuits and productivity.

3-5.2.4 Discuss common uses of technology in daily life and the advantages and disadvantages those uses provide.

Standard III - Technology Productivity Tools

Students use technology tools to enhance learning, increase productivity and promote creativity:

3-5.3.1 Use general-purpose productivity tools and peripherals to support personal productivity, remediate skill deficits and facilitate learning throughout the curriculum.

3-5.3.2 Use technology tools (e.g., multimedia authoring, presentation, Web tools, digital cameras, scanners) for individual and collaborative writing, communication and publishing activities to create knowledge products for audiences inside and outside the classroom.

3: Create a multimedia presentation or slide show for a content area.
4: Incorporate graphics into a text document.
4: Compose essays, letters, stories and/or reports that include graphics.
5: Create newsletters and journals.
5: Create a multimedia project that includes voice or sound.
5: Produce informational multimedia presentations in a content area.

Students use productivity tools to collaborate in constructing technology-enhanced models, preparing publications and producing other creative works:

3-5.3.3 Use general-purpose productivity tools and peripherals to support personal productivity, remediate skill deficits and facilitate learning throughout the curriculum.

3: Compose a friendly letter using a word processing program.
3: Combine text and graphics to create greeting cards, banners or business cards.
4: Compose a business letter using a word processing program.
4: Create a story, science report or California historical reflection using a word processing program.
5: Compose essays, letters, stories and/or reports that include graphics.
5: Create newsletters and journals.

3-5.3.4 Use technology tools (e.g., multimedia authoring, presentation, Web tools, digital cameras, scanners) for individual and collaborative writing, communication and publishing activities to create knowledge products for audiences inside and outside the classroom.

3: Create a multimedia presentation or slide show for a content area.
4: Create a story, science report or California historical reflection using a multimedia application.
5: Create a multimedia project that includes voice or sound.

Standard IV - Technology Communications Tools

Students use telecommunications to collaborate, publish and interact with peers, experts and other audiences:

3-5.4.1 Use telecommunications efficiently and effectively to access remote information, communicate with others in support of direct and independent learning and pursue personal interests.

3-5.4.2 Use telecommunications and online resources such as Web environments to participate in collaborative problem-solving activities for the purpose of developing solutions or products for audiences inside and outside the classroom.

Students use a variety of media and formats to communicate information and ideas effectively to multiple audiences:

3-5.4.3 Use technology tools (e.g., multimedia authoring, presentation, Web tools, digital cameras, scanners) for individual and collaborative writing, communication and publishing activities to create knowledge products for audiences inside and outside the classroom.

3-5: Use a camcorder or digital camera as a class to record activities/field trips.

Standard V - Technology Research Tools

Students use technology to locate, evaluate and collect information from a variety of sources:

3-5.5.1 Use technology resource to locate, evaluate and collect information.

4: Research information using digital resources (encyclopedias, atlases, etc.) or the Internet with adult supervision.
5: Research information using the Internet or digital resources (encyclopedias, atlases, etc.).

3-5.5.2 Use technology resources (e.g., calculators, data collection probes, videos, educational software) for problem solving, self-directed learning and extended learning activities.

Students use technology tools to process data and report results:

3-5.5.3 Use technology tools to process data and report results.

5: Print graphs of class surveys or projects.

Students evaluate and select new information resources and technological innovations based on the appropriateness to specific tasks:

3-5.5.5 Determine when technology is useful and select the appropriate tool(s) and technology resources to address a variety of tasks and problems.

Standard VI - Technology Problem-Solving and Decision-Making Tools

Students use technology resources for solving problems and making informed decisions:

3-5.6.1 Use technology resources (e.g., calculators, data collection probes, videos, educational software) for problem solving, self-directed learning and extended learning activities.

3-5.6.2 Determine when technology is useful and select the appropriate tool(s) and technology resources to address a variety of tasks and problems.

3-5.6.3 Evaluate the accuracy, relevance, appropriateness, comprehensiveness and bias of electronic information sources.

Students employ technology in the development of strategies for solving problems in the real world:

3-5.6.3 Determine when technology is useful and select the appropriate tool(s) and technology resources to address a variety of tasks and problems.

5: Create a multimedia project that includes voice or sound.

6-8.1.1 Demonstrate an understanding of concepts underlying hardware, software and connectivity, and of practical applications to learning and problem solving.

Students are proficient in the use of technology:

6-8.1.2 Apply strategies for identifying and solving routine hardware and software problems that occur during everyday use.

Standard II - Social, Ethical and Human Issues

Students understand the ethical, cultural and societal issues related to technology.

6-8.2.1 Understand and adhere to District policies for computer use.

6-8.2.2 Demonstrate knowledge of current changes in information technologies and the effect those changes have on the workplace and society.

Students practice responsible use of technology systems, information and software.

6-8.2.3 Exhibit legal and ethical behaviors when using information and technology, and discuss consequences of misuse.

6-8.2.4 Research and evaluate the accuracy, relevance, appropriateness, comprehensiveness and bias of electronic information sources concerning real-world problems.

Students develop positive attitudes toward technology use that support lifelong learning, collaboration, personal pursuits and productivity.

Standard III - Technology Productivity Tools

Students use technology tools to enhance learning, increase productivity and promote creativity:

6-8.3.1 Use content-specific tools, software and simulations (e.g., environmental probes, graphing calculators, exploratory environments, Web tools) to support learning and research.

6-8.3.2 Apply productivity, multimedia and web design tools and peripherals to support personal productivity, group collaboration and learning throughout the curriculum.

Students use productivity tools to collaborate in constructing technology-enhanced models, preparing publications and producing other creative works.

Standard IV - Technology Communications Tools

Students use telecommunications to collaborate, publish and interact with peers, experts and other audiences:

6-8.4.1 Collaborate with peers, experts and others using telecommunications and collaborative tools to investigate curriculum-related problems, issues and information, and to develop solutions or products for audiences inside and outside the classroom.

Students use a variety of media and formats to communicate information and ideas effectively to multiple audiences:

6-8.4.3 Design, develop, publish and present products (e.g., Web pages, videotapes) using technology resources that demonstrate and communicate curriculum concepts to audiences inside and outside the classroom.

Standard V - Technology Research Tools

6-8.5.1 Research and evaluate the accuracy, relevance, appropriateness, comprehensiveness and bias of electronic information sources concerning real-world problems.

Ways to Integrate Technology into the 6-8 Curriculum, Department Specific

Art

  • Create projects using digital tablet input devices and paint software.
  • Present projects, how-to demonstrations or reports using multimedia software.
  • Use color printers to create hard copies of student work.

Computers

  • Prepare reports and business correspondence using word processing, drawing, spreadsheets and the Internet.
  • Master keyboarding skills.
  • Create interdisciplinary reports using multimedia software.
  • Author and publish web pages.
  • Access the Internet to research ethical issues, troubleshooting resources and criteria for judging web sites.
  • Learn software applications commonly used in the business world.

Core, English & Social Studies

  • Use word processing and database programs to develop and improve note-taking skills.
  • Use word processing programs for poetry and prose writing assignments.
  • Access the Internet for online news services and current events.
  • Create multimedia presentations.
  • Utilize CD-ROM and online resources to do research for projects.

Drama

  • Videotape class productions.
  • Refine movie production using video-editing equipment.
  • Coordinate lighting and sound for dramatic presentations using computer equipment.
  • Videotape activities for other classrooms.

English Language Learners (ELL)

  • Create presentations and displays using camcorders, VCRs and monitors.
  • Use CD-ROM for language acquisition and development of proper pronunciation, research and information.
  • Access the Internet and use word processing for writing reports, gathering information and doing research.

Foreign Language Study

  • Study and enhance language skills learned in the classroom using technology.
  • Create and publish stories using language related word processing and dictionary software.
  • Film oral exercises and presentations using a video camera.
  • Use a Flex-cam as a presentation tool.
  • Use multimedia software for class presentations.

Home Economics

  • Use technology to determine the nutritive value of food, design and plan menus, comparison shop and analyze cost of recipes.
  • Create and enter recipes in a database.
  • Use electronic sewing machine to customize projects.

Industrial Technology

  • Develop technical drawings using CAD software.
  • Test and modify project design using technology and CAD software.
  • Use spreadsheet for project analysis, including cost analysis, times, weights and strength-to-weight ratios.
  • Use printers and plotters to print final drawings for evaluation and further development.
  • Use machinery (CAD/CAM) that is linked to CAD systems to produce projects.
  • Research projects using the Internet.
  • Use VCR/TV for individual tutorials and computer display.

Leadership

  • Access other school web pages to see what leadership classes offer.
  • Use multimedia software to document student life.
  • Create certificates and awards using word processing, database and graphics.
  • Prepare morning announcements and student council publicity using word processing software.

Math

  • Use scientific calculators.
  • Use geometry software (grade 7).
  • Create spreadsheets for data analysis.
  • Perform computer-simulated experiments, (i.e., roll dice, shuffle cards, pitch pennies) (grade 7).
  • Work with graphing calculators (grade 8).
  • Use algebra software (grade 8).

Music

  • Videotape musical presentations.
  • Use music notation and MIDI software to enhance the music program.

Newspaper

  • Compose articles using AlphaSmart devices.
  • Use digital cameras, scanners and graphics software to create images.
  • Layout and publish the newspaper using computers.

Science

  • Use a variety of scientific instruments such as the Flex-cam, barometer and pH meter, to take measurements and make observations.
  • Utilize computers and appropriate software to analyze data and present projects.
  • Access the Internet for research.
  • Use interactive laserdiscs and CD-ROM discs that enhance curriculum.

Special Education

  • Use computers, AlphaSmart devices, CD-ROM discs and printers to support general education assignments and to address deficit skill areas.

Squire News Network

  • Produce news segments and broadcasts using video cameras, editing equipment, computers and software.
  • Broadcast news to all classrooms using closed circuit television.
  • Produce Video Yearbook.

Yearbook

  • Produce the yearbook using computers.
